Christian Homeschooling for Preschool

For the 2023-2024 school year, our family embarked on the wild (and fun), adventure of Christian homeschooling.

Our daughter began preschool at 4 years old. Initially I planned on a less structured preschool with a heavy focus on play. However, I quickly found that my daughter thrives on structure and really enjoyed the book work we had purchased for her.

Not all Christian Homeschool Programs are alike

Years of researching Christian homeschool programs have led me to understand that no two Christian based homeschool programs are alike. One program may focus on a traditional structured school approach, while another may take a more gentle approach to learning.

What kind of Christian Homeschooler are you?

It is so important to think about what type of homeschooling fits you and your child. Each child may learn differently! I found it helpful to take a quiz to help me narrow down my homeschool style. You can find a free quiz at The Treehouse Schoolhouse. She also has beautiful homeschool resources as well!

Determine your Why

Determining why you want to embark on homeschooling your preschooler (or older child) is so important.

Some parents report concern about school safety or negative peer pressure, while others focus on the positive aspects that homeschooling provides.

For our family the positive aspects far out weigh what could be consider the “fear based” reasons on why we homeschool.

In our family we focus on doing life together. What does that mean? We want to involve our children in most, if not all, of our daily lives and routine! From completing simple household chores, to baking scones (I have a to die for recipe HERE), we want our children to grow up knowing that they are valued members of our family.

The Perks of Homeschooling our Preschooler

The first perk of homeschooling our preschooler was the TIME we saved and in turn, the time we were able to spend together, investing in our relationship with her. Homeschooling our preschooler took about 30 minutes of sit down work, with the rest of the day focused on learning through play and other experiences.

Another perk is that my husband and I did not have to ask anyone, or any school district, for permission to take our daughter on vacations or spur of the moment trips during the week.

My favorite perk of homeschooling my daughter through preschool was getting to deepen our relationship and lean into what makes her a unique individual and image bearer of God!

Our Homeschool Curriculum

Finding a Christian homeschool curriculum for our preschooler (and in the years to come) was a top priority for my husband and I.

We chose the Stepping Stones MasterBooks preschool curriculum for our daughter’s first year of homeschooling and we are continuing with MasterBooks for kindergarten!

What we love about MasterBooks

MasterBooks Stepping Stones is a nice combination of structure and play, all of which takes a developmentally appropriate approach. We loved the full color workbook pages and the Bible heroes that are introduced each week.

Did I mention that the Stepping Stones curriculum is a three day a week program? I found this to be a perfect amount of structure for my new preschooler. It allowed her to get used to completing workbook pages without becoming overwhelmed.

Homeschool Add Ons

While finding a curriculum is important, I think adding in extracurriculars or other enrichment activities can be just as important!

One worry homeschool parents have is if their children will be socialized enough. I say that is completely up to you, the parent, for the most part! Join a local homeschool co-op or meet up group, attend enrichment sessions at your local library, visit the park, join a church! These are all great places to let your child interact with kids (and adults) of all ages!

Our families favorite homeschool add-ons are:

  • Homeschool Meet Up Group Playdates
  • Gymnastics
  • Local Park Playdates
  • Library story times
  • Church
  • Museums
  • Public Pool
  • Splash pad
  • Nature Center
  • Lake adventures

Including other activities into your homeschool day does not have to cost an arm and a leg! Most of the activities we participate in are free or low cost. Keep an eye on your local community social media pages to stay in the loop for fun and free activities.

Reaching the Heart of Your Homeschooler

As a Christian mom, I believe it should be a top priority for you to reach the heart of each of your children. We can do this by devoting our time to teaching them not only their ABCs but also through sharing the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ for them.

If I could leave you with one bit of encouragement, it would be that you can do this! As long as you follow Christ’s footsteps and heed to his calling. Lean on Jesus, pursue the hearts of your children, and have a great year of homeschooling!

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
