Learning I was pregnant with our second child was a complete surprise. We had not started trying for our second pregnancy, but we had discussed that we wanted to try soon. However, God knew exactly when to bless us with our second baby, we just never expected it to happen so soon.
Second Pregnancy Early Symptoms
The first symptoms that made me start thinking that I could possibly be pregnant were typical. But after taking a pregnancy test with a negative result my mind chalked those symptoms up as a sign of an impending menstrual cycle.
My early pregnancy symptoms included:
- Dizziness
- Slight morning sickness
- Implantation cramping
- Food aversions
Difference With Second Pregnancy
The differences in my first pregnancy and my second pregnancy were fairly obvious. While much has been the same, there were some noticeable differences. Especially within my second pregnancy’s first trimester.
In my pregnancy with my second child, I noticed much more morning sickness than with my first. During my first pregnancy I never had any morning sickness. However, in this second pregnancy I survived my share of early pregnancy morning sickness. Thankfully most of this waned before 12 weeks.
What Helps Morning Sickness?
When does morning sickness begin?
For me, it began almost immediately after implantation. Before I ever got a positive pregnancy test, I started noticing slight nausea throughout the day. My morning sickness ramped up after my positive test.
I found that I often would get sick if I did not eat soon after waking up in the morning. In an effort to prevent my morning sickness I would eat small snacks throughout the day to make sure I never got too hungry.
I also really recommend Sea Bands, which you wear over your wrists to prevent nausea. These bands apply pressure on key pressure points on your wrists. I have used these in the past when my husband and I went on a cruise. They worked then and they work now!
Two of the best things about Sea Bands is that they are re-usable and completely safe!
In addition to small snacks and Sea Bands, if my nausea got to bad, I would take half of a Dramamine pill. Dramamine was approved by my doctor as well as vitamin B6. It’s so important to talk with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or vitamins.
There are also other remedies such as ginger candies, Pink Stork vitamins for nausea, and aromatherapy. Find what works for you and keep doing it!
Pregnancy Sciatic Pain
Another difference with my second pregnancy was how early I started to have issues with sciatic pain. My sciatic pain really hit me out of nowhere. I was not prepared!
According to the Mayo clinic, “Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg.”
I use stretching, yoga, and heat therapy to relieve my pregnancy sciatic pain. With so many pregnancy yoga and stretching videos on YouTube, you are bound to find one that fits your needs.
Round Ligament Pain
According to Baby Center, “Round ligament pain is a sharp, jabbing, aching, cramping pain on one or both sides of your abdomen. It may be short-lived pain or just discomfort.”
Round ligament pain usually starts in the second trimester. With my second pregnancy I noticed round ligament pain much sooner.
My round ligament pain is triggered by sneezing, coughing, or moving too quickly.
While there isn’t much you can do to treat or prevent round ligament pain, it is comforting knowing that your baby is okay, even if you experience some aches and pains.
When Do You Start Showing a Second Pregnancy?
I started showing my second pregnancy a few weeks before my first pregnancy. The picture above is a side by side comparison of both of my pregnancies at 13 weeks. They are pretty similar but I can tell that I am slightly bigger with my second pregnancy.
Second Pregnancy Announcements
It’s strange that with a second pregnancy, the excitement of doing all of the things for the first time isn’t really there. Of course I am excited to welcome a new little one into our family. But all of the anticipation of making the announcement isn’t quite the same.
We waited an extra week or two to announce our second pregnancy to everyone and make it social media official.
With my sister being pregnant at the same time, I thought it was the perfect time to take my second pregnancy announcement photo.
We used the cute saying “Future Cousins” with the number of weeks we both were at the time.
Each Pregnancy is Special
While there have been differences between my two pregnancies, one thing remains the same.
Each child is special in their own way.
My husband and I prayed for each of our children. God chose to bless us with two precious souls.
We will forever be grateful to welcome a new little one into our family.
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
